Modern Macs have a built-in diagnostic test that can be used to help troubleshoot a hardware problem. The technology has changed over the years, and the procedure is determined by how old your Mac is. Install Apple MacBook Pro (13' Early 2011) laptop drivers for Windows 10 x64, or download DriverPack Solution software for automatic drivers intallation and update. If you have an earlier Mac, the equivalent is called an Apple Hardware Test (AHT), but the basic principles are the same. To start using Apple Diagnostics or AHT, first turn off any firmware. I love my old MacBook Pro. It does everything I want for a portable coding, writing and occasional editing device. I’ve had it since 2011 and it’s still going strong. Apple however doesn’t want to suport it anymore. I’m stuck with macOS High Sierra, without an option to upgrade without shadowy patches.
MacBook Pro :: Apple Hardware Test Freezes, 'one Second' Into The Test?
Apr 9, 2012I have a 17' unibody MBP (early 2009, specs below). It was running hotter than usual the other day, so I F2 booted into AHT to run a diagnostic. The status box within AHT showed 1 second into the 1st pass, and never got beyond that. Several seconds after that status message was displayed, the cursor froze. The time counter never advanced after that, and although I waited a long time, nothing happened. The test froze.Â
I've tried it several times more. It once worked, but every other time has frozen. Checking the 'extended test' box, or trying to run in loop mode has made no difference - still freezes at '1 second'.Â
I've had this machine for 3 years, OS's Leopard through Lion, and this has never happened before. I last ran a test, successfully, in January. I've not changed any components or suffered any damage since then. Memtest (ver 4.22) says my RAM is fine. (I ran this because the first portion of the AHT is the RAM component.) Aside from the aforementioned overheating episode, which disappeared, my machine's been fine.Â

MacBook Pro :: Can't Get Apple Hardware Test To Run
Apr 7, 2012I purchased my Macbook Pro (Early 2011) 2ghz i7 edition, about 4 months ago now,
Earlier today my MacBook Pro ran a grey bar update during start up started up & ran a little slower until I restarted afterwards. I was concerened until the restart, however I am no longer concerned. My main issue is that now I can't seem to correctly follow the instructions to successfully start an apple hardware test. I have previously owned a Mac mini, Powermac G5 Dual 1.8ghz and Powermac Quad G5 and I have always been able to successfully run apple hardware tests on them.
I held down the 'D' key during startup prior to the grey screen and I tried plugging in a ethernet cable, the powercable and a USB keyboard all to no avail.

MacBook Pro :: Will It Run Normally After Use The Apple Hardware Test
Jun 3, 2012I've been having issues with my 2011 MacBook Pro, I just keep getting a weird error popup but it always flashes up and goes away before I can read it. My Mac has also even running a bit slower lately and I know that I can do the Apple Hardware Test to check out that all the hardware is functioning properly. But will my Mac continue to run normally after I do the AHT? Like, will I be able to use it as I was before?

Aug 30, 2014I have a MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011)Â using OSX 10.7.5
Trying to run Apple hardware test as my computer keeps crashing, or shutting down 30min in.  I restart while holding down 'D' and nothing comes up. takes a while to startup, but then goes straight to desktop. What am I doing wrong? I'm ethernet connected to internet. When I bought the computer I installed an SSD HD. I remember when needing to install new software on the new drive it was a nuisance since the computer didn't actually ship with any software CDs. Had to do it over the internet somehow. The computer didn't have any problems before so never had to use AHT until now.Â
secondary question. I also reset SMC, by pressing left side shift+control+option+power key after shut down, but didn't get much response out of that either. no sound, or signal that what I did actually reset SMC. How would I know it reset or not?

Mar 9, 2008My wifes new macbook has had a few weird things happen, including 2 kernel panics right out of the box. She puts in the restore discs, reboots holding D and gets to the AHT screen. Selects the language then gets the that message, 'apple hardware test does not support this machine'
MacBook Pro :: How Long Does Extended Apple Hardware Test Take
Nov 25, 2009I'm running one on my mid-2009 15' MacBook Pro with 4Gb RAM. It appears to be taking forever as it tests memory. It's been on Pass Number 2 for around 30 minutes now. The progress bar is either completely stalled or moving VERY slowly. Is this normal for the extended AHT? This is the first time I've run the extended test. I ran the quick test just prior to this one and it returned no errors. Portrait professional mac download free full version.

MacBook Pro :: 8GB RAM In 2010 Giving 4MEM Error On Apple Hardware Test?
Oct 11, 2010I recently bought 2 4GB sticks of RAM that someone recommended on here, the brand is G.SKILL and I got them from newegg.
The thing is, since installing them I have had 2 kernel panics (gray screen of death) that I wasn't having with my 4GB before.
The thing is, I have run Apple Hardware Test and with 8GB I get this error: 4MEM/62/40000000 0x84de1318
So I take out both sticks and stick them in the reverse slots, and I get: 4MEM/65/40000000 0x84e0d318
So I am thinking it must be one of the sticks of ram. So I take them both out and put 1 in the bottom slot, no issues. Stick the other one in, again no issues. So I put one into the top slot to see if maybe a slot has a problem and I once again have no issues when running the extended tests.
So, I decide that maybe I just need to retry putting the ram in again and I get this error, slightly different this time.4MEM/66/40000000 0x84e11318
I really don't know what is going on here, nothing is plugged into the computer, and the RAM modules seem to be fine on their own. I guess for now I am going to stick the Apple RAM back in and see if it throws a similar error.

OS X :: Apple Rapidly Seeding Mac OS X 10.5.3 Test Builds
Apr 1, 2008The next security and maintenance release for Apple's Leopard operating system could arrive sooner than later if the company maintains its current cadence, which has seen two successive pre-release builds land in the hands of developers in just five days. On the heels of the first external test build labeled Mac OS X 10.5.3 build 9D10 and released privately late last week, the Mac maker on Tuesday followed up with build 9D11, which adds nearly 20 more fixes and code corrections, bringing the new total expected with software's release to nearly 100. Among the most recent improvements, according to people familiar with the ongoing testing process, are fixes to AirPort connection issues and problems with the MacBook Air's sleep functionality. Other fresh fixes target Time Machine, Spaces layering and preferences, graphics corruption, display issues within Mail.app, Back to My Mac communication issues, and Automator quirks when interacting with Mail.app.
As was the case with Friday's pre-release distribution, Apple reportedly asked that its developer community focus their ongoing testing efforts on two dozen core system components. These include, but are not limited to, AirPort, AppleScript, Audio, Dashboard, Directory Services, Dock, DVD Player, Finder, Graphics, Installer, Printing, and VoiceOver. Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update, which currently weighs in at a hefty 410+ MB in Delta form and 530+ MB in Combo form, will mark the third update to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard since the software made its official debut in late October. While those people familiar with the ongoing testing process have been unable to provide a target release date, it's presume the update is being groomed for distribution sometime in April or May. OS X :: Apple Asks To Test Fonts In Latest Mac OS X 10.6.3 Beta
Mar 16, 2010Apple on Tuesday afternoon pushed out another private beta of Mac OS X 10.6.3, asking its developer community to test font compatibility and stability alongside a handful of other components that have been in need of evaluation for the past several weeks.
Those other components include iCal, QuickTime and graphics drivers, according to people familiar with the beta software. The last private beta, distributed March 5th and labeled build 10D567, also listed those components as focus areas, in addition to Rosetta and third party printer drivers.
When it's released later this month, Mac OS X 10.6.3 will bundle an update to QuickTime X that improves security and compatibility while also enhancing overall reliability of the media software.
The Snow Leopard update will also include tweaks that enhance the performance of Apple's 64-bit Logic pro audio suite and deliver better compatibility with third-party printers and OpenGL-grounded applications.
Other fixes baked into the release target issues with mail messages displaying the incorrect background color and problems copying files to a shared Windows volume.
The latest beta carries build number 10D571 and weighs in around 700MB.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

On the one hand Apple now recommends you simply use the disks that came with your Mac on the other hand Apple says 'discs are dead' and removes optical drives from Macs. How crazy is this?
But great hint :-)
Yeah, you're quite correct! Sorry for the mistake.
Somehow I forgot to add that in when writing the hint (or I was using the root account at the time….)
Anyway, yes, sudo must be used. (It would be nice if the original hint could be modified. :))
Fixed it. Thanks for the catch.

Had out esteemed smarta$$ looked, he'd have seen that Baltutis below posted the correct command.
If you're gonna call someone out, be smarter.
sudo cp -R /Volumes/[your INSTALL DISK name]/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics /System/Library/CoreServices

If you use the discs that came with your Mac, you can also simply install the 'CPUHelpFiles.mpkg' metapackage, usually on the Applications Install Disc (part of 'Install Bundled Software': select only 'CPU Help Files' and deselect everything else): this will install AHT and also the documentation files for your machine.
I forgot about the CPUHelpFiles package because other utilities in there (such as the processor pref pane seem to be broken now), but that does work if you would prefer not to use terminal.
Well, rather, the 'Processor' preference pane was an optional part of the Developer Tools (up to version 3.x for Snow Leopard), while 'CPUHelpFiles.mpkg' installs only AHT and the machine-specific documentation stuff inside '/Library/Documentation/User Guides And Information': so, it should be quite safe too install, as there are no extra utilities there.
Of course, *to* install (not 'too')..
I'm pretty sure this doesn't work if your boot volume is encrypted. You'd need to create a separate unencrypted boot disk/partition, boot to that, install AHT, then boot into AHT.
On encrypted systems, there is a small booter partition which contains the EFI application that asks for your password, loads the kernel from the booter partition and once the kernel found and unlocked your encrypted volume, system startup continues as usual.
If your system has the recovery system (and most Lion installs should have), it and the booter share a partition after your root volume. diskutil list will confirm there is this hidden partition called 'Recovery HD'. If your system for some reason does not have the recovery system, but you encrypted the root volume, the partition will be named 'Boot OS X'.
Either way, just mount this hidden partition ('diskutil mount Recovery HD' or 'diskutil mount Boot OS X') and then copy the .diagnostics folder to /Volumes/{Recovery HD|Boot OS X}/System/Library/CoreServices.
After that, you can boot to AHT by holding D, like on unencrypted systems.
It is probably a good idea to copy AHT to the Recovery HD, regardless of the encryption status of your root volume, but I haven't tested if the firmware finds AHT there when the partition is not the first HFS+ volume on your primary disk.
Curiously, one can boot the recovery system, but not AHT, when the firmware password is set..
I just tried doing this, but there isn't enough space on the recovery volume to copy all of the files in the .diagnostics folder. : (
Maybe I'm wrong, but the command should be:
sudo cp -R /Volumes/[your INSTALL disc's name]/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics /System/Library/CoreServices/
You are correct, BT! Slight difference, but then that's what makes things work or not!
SB
FYI, I couldn't get 'D' to work on a 2011 MacBook Air. My drive is encrypted and I had a firmware password turned on. Once I disabled the firmware password, 'D' worked. That's a bit unfortunate, as what if my drive has died? How can I reach the recovery partition to disable the firmware password to get to the hardware test.
great hint but AHT is pretty worthless and no longer really used. If you want to run diags on your computer that will actually do something, use apple service diagnostics (ASD) for your model instead
I could not find my original disks, but was able to restore the .diagnostics folder from a pre Lion upgrade time machine backup. Had to show hidden files first, but then just went back far enough and restored that one folder. Boot while holding D worked fine.
Alright, I still don't understand how to find either the 'Holding the D' function and/or some other utility (3rd party or Apple) for those of us who have a (Late-2011) MacBook Pro!? No disks, just a useless SuperDrive and no USB stick either. I did make myself my own USB restore flash drive, however, and I also have the Recovery HD partition unhidden, mounted, but I just cannot seem to locate this '.diagnostics'..folder(is it?) or is it a pkg or a file? :-( System files are also visible, so I did some manual searching for the elusive diagnostic 'something-or-other'. No dice across the board. :(
I would really like to check my 2x8GB RAM chips, which, thus far, work perfectly fine and show up correctly everywhere they should, including System Info/Profiler, 'About this Mac', iStat Menus, Activity Monitor, and a few others. I just want to make sure, as I had not heard of that memory company before and the price was incredible ($139 shipped, no tax for BOTH from a seller on Amazon).
Thanks for helping! ;-)
I've got MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011) with Apple Hardware Test originally accessed by holding D at startup.
However after restoring Mac OS X Lion by the Internet using Lion Recovery D-key stopped working. I've followed the tip and copied .diagnostics folder:
ls -al /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics/
total 48
drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 Feb 13 16:06 .
drwxr-xr-x 125 root wheel 4250 Feb 13 16:06 .
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 22590 Feb 13 16:06 diags.efi
and
ls -al /Volumes/Recovery HD/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics/
total 48
drwxr-xr-x 3 User staff 102 Jun 27 2011 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 User staff 136 Jun 27 2011 .
-rwxr-xr-x 1 User staff 22590 Jun 27 2011 diags.efi
However the D-key still doesn't call AHT as expected.
What else should I try?

On newer Macs (which shipped with Mavericks), Apple Diagnostics initially is on the Recovery HD; so, after mounting it with:
$ diskutil mount Recovery HD
.. Apple Diagnostics is in the folder:
/Volumes/Recovery HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/.diagnostics
So, the best thing to do would be to make a copy of this invisible folder (personally, I zipped it and stored it on an external hard drive), in order to be able to restore it if you reinstall OS X (which also updates the recovery partition, removing the '.diagnostics' folder); when restoring it, also remember to restore the original permissions for the '.diagnostics' folder and its contents: i.e., essentially, root read-write, wheel read-only and everyone read-only.
Sadly, presently there seems to be no way to re-download Apple Diagnostics from Apple and reinstall it: so, if you didn't make the backup copy from your initial, out-of-the-box setup, the only option remaining is the Internet-based one, as also explained here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5781
(Probably, the situation is similar also for Macs which shipped with Lion and Mountain Lion (with AHT)..)
